TV Show Review: Stranger Things

If you miss the good old 80s science fiction movies that were so exciting even without sophisticated technology, this is a great show for you. The Duffer Brothers-directed series takes you on a nostalgic trip to a time when young Spielberg and Lucas made E.T and Star Wars.

The show is set in a small, forgotten town where an owl pecking at a woman’s head was the most exciting thing to have happened. But then suddenly, the calm is disturbed by a chain of mysterious events. The story has you hooked from the very beginning. The writers spoon feed you just enough to keep you involved but have you asking for more.

A valuable asset to the show is how well defined the characters are, each with a clear purpose of existence in the story. Each of the characters backstories connect to their actions and make the narrative authentic. The casting on the show is befitting to their characters. A special mention to Winona Ryder and David Harbour for the conviction with which they play their role.

The plot has a neat beginning, middle and end and the pacing is just right. A good deal of attention has been given to the look and feel of the show. The little details from their hair cuts, glass frames to the telephone and tv sets, everything is reminiscent of a life in small town America during that time. The background score is excellent and suitably enhances the narrative.

The four boys are only too happy to be lost in their world of science and superheroes. The camaraderie between them is affable and has you longing to go back to your childhood where you ganged up with friends at each others’ houses and played for hours at end without a single thought of touch screens.

Watch the show if you like supernatural/sci-fi thrillers. Kudos to Netflix for sanctioning awesome shows! The second season comes out this October and I can't wait!
