TV Show Review: Modern Family

A conventional family, a gay couple with a baby and a couple with a sizeable age gap. These are the three protagonist groups in this American sitcom. A brilliantly written comedy show that showcases and then deflects all possible stereotypes in its own clever way while being light, funny and entertaining.

The show follows the main characters, who are all related, in their daily routines filled with wisecracks. An episode starts with each set of characters dealing with a conflict but by the end, a general theme emerges to tie them together with simple, beautiful messages on life.

The show is structured such that the main narrative is interspersed with interviews of the characters. It is a unique tool of storytelling and builds a special connection with the audience. The characters are more honest in the interviews than they are in the main narrative, which results in a hilarious sequence of events and makes the show all the more endearing to watch.

The characters in this series are the soul of the show. Each has a well defined personality with a clear set of traits supported by solid backstories and embellished with thoughtful details. The show successfully employs various forms of comedy including puns, physical gags, sarcasm and word play.

The excellent writing is taken to the next level by the casting. Sophia Vergera (Gloria) as the immigrant Latina, Ty Burell (Phil) as the nerd/geek- trying to be cool dad and Eric Stonestreet (Cam) as the melodramatic gay guy are my personal favourites.

The cinematography is such that the show appears to be shot on a hand-held cam corder. This clever technique makes the viewers feel like spectators in the world of the characters, just witnessing another family go through these moments.

The show has been going strong with the eighth season coming out this year. It is the kind of the show you want to watch after a long tiring day, just something light to have a laugh. It is a beautiful portrayal of human emotions, insecurities, pet peeves and desires.
